Lot 2811
Constans, 337-350. Siliqua (Silver, 20 mm, 3.14 g, 12 h), Antiochia, circa 340. Pearl-diademed head of Constans to right. Rev. VOTIS / V / MVLTIS / X in four lines within laurel wreath; in exergue, ANT. RIC -. RSC -. Of the highest rarity, one of only two known examples. Flan crack and with light cleaning scratches, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Naumann E-Auction 48, 20 November 2016, 657.

This type forms a group with RIC VIII 35 and 36, both attributed in RIC VIII to Constantius II. However, Ramskold (pers. com.) suggests that the 'VOTIS / XX / MVLTIS / XXX' and 'VOTIS / XV / MVLTIS / XX' legends are for Constantine II and Constantius II, respectively. The legend 'VOTIS / V / MVLTIS / X' must be for Constans, whose quinquennalia began on 25 December 337. The diadem indicates a slightly later date, and medallions celebrating the quinquennalia of Constans, such as RIC VIII Thessalonica 45, should be dated to 340 or later.
